Conquer the Roof of Africa on the scenic and popular Machame Route, known as the "Whiskey Route." This 7-day itinerary provides excellent acclimatization for a high summit success rate. Trek through lush rainforest, heath, and alpine desert to reach the glacier-clad summit of Uhuru Peak (5,895m) for a sunrise you will never forget. Professional guides, porters, and full support are included.
Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp. Trek through lush rainforest (5-7 hrs). Elevation: 1,800m to 3,000m.
Machame Camp to Shira Camp. Ascend into heather and moorland zone (4-6 hrs). Elevation: 3,000m to 3,850m.
Shira Camp to Barranco Camp (via Lava Tower). Acclimatization day; hike high to Lava Tower (4,600m), sleep low at Barranco (6-7 hrs). Elevation: 3,850m to 3,900m.
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp. Conquer the Barranco Wall, then descend into Karanga Valley (4-5 hrs). Elevation: 3,900m to 3,995m.
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp. Trek to the base camp for the summit (4-5 hrs). Rest and prepare for summit night. Elevation: 3,995m to 4,673m.
Summit Day! Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp. Midnight start for the summit (6-7 hrs). Descend to Mweka Camp (12-14 hrs total). Elevation: 4,673m to 5,895m to 3,100m.
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate. Final descent through rainforest (3-4 hrs). Receive certificates, transfer to hotel in Moshi.
